Design, Detail, and Denim: My Day at the URBN HDQ Vendor Market
As a creative person myself, there is something amazing about spending a day in a space where design isn't just a department—it’s the entire atmosphere. I recently had the incredible opportunity to be a part of a vendor market at URBN at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia.
As someone who personally loves the Anthropologie and Free People brands, being immersed in the URBN creative hub felt wonderful. It was a day surrounded by "design-first" thinkers, and it was the perfect backdrop to showcase the latest custom embroidered pieces from The Handkerchief Shop.
Beyond the Stitch: A Design-First Approach to Embroidery
At my Marlton, NJ studio and for the last 12 years I have always expanded beyond traditional "monogramming" to focus on bespoke embroidery design. For the URBN market, I wanted to showcase the full breadth of what modern embroidery can do. My display featured a curated mix of:
-
Custom Embroidered Apparel: Soft knits and comfy sweatshirts.
-
Artisanal Hats & Accessories: Pieces designed to make even your casual days look put together.
-
Heirloom Handkerchiefs: The core of my brand, made in the USA since 2008.
-
Personalized Bags: Stitching can elevate everyday utility.
The Upcycled Collection: The Handkerchief Shop x Mainly Vintage
One of the highlights of the day was debuting my new upcycled collection which will always be changing. I collaborated with Mainly Vintage in Medford, NJ, sourcing incredible vintage Y2K denim pieces that were just waiting for a second life.
I added embroidered embellishments—fun summery lobster vibes—that turned these pieces into one-of-a-kind Spring and Summer essentials. This type of sustainable fashion embroidery is something I am incredibly passionate about. Taking something with a history and adding a custom, hand-designed element is the definition of modern luxury.
Brand Partnerships: Curating the One-of-a-Kind
Spending time at the Navy Yard reminded me why I love what I do. It’s about the collaboration between fabric, thread and design. I don't just "hit go" on a machine; I can work with individuals and brands to curate one-of-a-kind items.
If you are a brand looking to add a bespoke element to your collection—or a customer looking for that singular piece no one else has—my 18 years of manufacturing and 12 years of embroidery experience are at your disposal. Whether it’s custom logo or design embroidery for a boutique or personalized bridal keepsakes, we specialize in the details that make people stop and ask, "Where did you get that?"
